世界著名植物学家、生物多样性保护先驱、中国人民的老朋友、辰山植物园高级顾问彼得・汉密尔顿・雷文先生与世长辞。

　　雷文先生与上海的缘分跨越近一个世纪。他1936年出生于上海，始终把这座城市视为故土。早在上海植物园建设初期，他便以美国植物学界领袖的身份，积极推动中美植物科学交流，为上海的植物园事业与科研合作搭建起重要的国际桥梁。这份深沉的牵挂，从上海植物园一直延续到辰山植物园的诞生与成长。

　　辰山建园之初，雷文先生欣然担任高级顾问，以全球顶尖植物园的管理经验与远见，为辰山的规划、科研、保育、科普和国际合作指明方向。他多次亲临园区，为辰山的发展倾囊相授、悉心指导，陪伴辰山从一片新生园地，成长为享誉国际的一流综合性植物园。

　　作为协同进化理论奠基人、《中国植物志》英文修订版核心主编，雷文先生以毕生之力推动全球植物科学研究与生物多样性保护。2014 年，他莅临辰山出席基因组与植物进化研讨会，引领辰山科研走向国际前沿。2017年，在第19届国际植物学大会(深圳)上，81岁高龄的他作为大会名誉主席，发表震撼全球的《深圳宣言：拯救植物，以拯救我们自己》，并与辰山植物园执行园长胡永红深入交流，嘱托辰山坚守濒危植物迁地保护、融入全球植物保护网络，为中国与世界的生态事业担当使命。

　　他不仅是学术泰斗，更是温暖亲切的师长。他曾与夫人帕特里夏・雷文博士一同来到辰山，与园艺、科普一线工作人员座谈交流，在植物收集、景观营造、游客服务、科普教育等方面提出宝贵建议，鼓励辰山讲好中国植物故事，彰显中国植物价值。他一生被誉为“地球守护者”，用行动诠释了科学家对自然、对人类的责任与大爱。

　　雷文先生的离去，是国际植物学界与全球生物多样性保护领域的重大损失，更是辰山植物园难以弥补的悲痛与遗憾。他的智慧融入辰山的一草一木，他的精神刻入园中每一寸土地。我们将永远铭记先生的教诲与嘱托，坚守科研与保育初心，传承生态保护理念，深化国际合作，守护植物多样性，让先生热爱的绿色事业在辰山永续传承。

　　In Memory of Dr. Peter Hamilton Raven(1936–2026)

　　We deeply mourn the demise of Mr. Peter Hamilton Raven, an internationally celebrated botanist, a forerunner in biodiversity conservation, a cherished old friend of the Chinese people, and Honorary Senior Consultant of Chenshan Botanical Garden.

　　Born in Shanghai in 1936, Dr. Raven maintained an unbroken, heartfelt connection to this city and its botanical communities for nearly his entire life. Long before Chenshan was established, he championed Sino‑American botanical exchange and supported the early development of Shanghai’s public gardens. When Chenshan began its journey, he stepped forward as a senior advisor, sharing his unparalleled experience in leading world‑class botanical institutions to guide our planning, research, conservation, education, and international collaboration. Through decades of visits and guidance, he helped nurture Chenshan into the comprehensive, world‑class botanical garden it is today.

　　A foundational figure in modern evolutionary biology, Dr. Raven co‑developed the groundbreaking theory of coevolution, reshaping our understanding of life on Earth. As the lead foreign editor of the Flora of China series, he dedicated decades to documenting and sharing China’s extraordinary plant diversity with the world.

　　At Chenshan, he inspired our scientific ambition: in 2014, he delivered a keynote address at our Symposium on Genomics and Plant Evolution, elevating our research to global standards. In 2017, at the 19th International Botanical Congress in Shenzhen—the first IBC held in China—he met warmly with Chenshan’s Executive Director Hu Yonghong. Fresh from delivering his landmark address The Shenzhen Declaration: Save Plants to Save Ourselves, he encouraged Chenshan to strengthen endangered plant conservation, expand our global conservation partnerships, and uphold our responsibility to protect China’s natural heritage.

　　Dr. Raven was not only a towering scholar but also a generous mentor and advocate for public gardens. Together with his wife, Dr. Patricia Raven, he visited Chenshan and met with our horticulturists, educators, and operational teams. He offered thoughtful advice on plant collections, landscape design, visitor experience, and public storytelling, urging us to celebrate native Chinese plants and share their beauty and significance with the world. His warmth, wisdom, and gentle encouragement touched everyone who had the privilege to work with him.

　　Throughout his life, Dr. Raven was recognized globally as a“Guardian of the Earth.” His legacy is woven into every corner of Chenshan: in our living collections, our conservation programs, our commitment to education, and our mission to connect people with nature.

　　The loss of Dr. Peter Raven is felt deeply across the global botanical community. For Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, he was a mentor, a partner, and a friend. We will honor his memory by continuing his life’s work: protecting plant diversity, advancing scientific knowledge, fostering international cooperation, and inspiring future generations to care for our planet.

　　May his memory be a blessing, and may his legacy live on in the gardens he loved and the plants he dedicated his life to protecting.
