Rapid Assessment Meeting held in South China Botanical Garden

  36 experts from botanical gardens, scientific institutions, universities and natural reserves gathered five days in South China Botanical Garden, CAS, assessing the endangered status of the plant species in Guangdong province, southern China.

  The method and procedure for the assessment first was told by Prof. Wang Ruijiang, the project leader of Native Plant Species Inventory and Conservation in Guangdong. Then the experts were divided into seven groups to discuss the endangered status of the species that they were much more familiar. The results from them finally collected and revised by all to ensure the accuracy.

  It has formed an initial endangered status list of the 6039 native plant species in Guangdong area. The results shows that there are about 60 species designated as critically endangered, 195 species as endangered and 255 as vulnerable species.

  The team members will survey the targeted species in the wild and natural reserves.
